Police officer injured in Breda after suspect throws bike, advertising sign
A police officer was injured Saturday afternoon in Breda after being assaulted with a bicycle and a wooden advertising sign during a foot pursuit following a traffic stop, Omroep Brabant reports.
The incident began when police pulled over a vehicle because its periodic technical inspection (APK) had expired. The driver, who did not cooperate with the stop, halted his vehicle on Edisonplein, exited, and fled on foot.
As one of the officers chased him, the suspect threw a bicycle and a wooden sign at the pursuing officer. The officer was injured but managed to catch up with the suspect and arrest him.
Police identified the suspect as a 31-year-old man from Breda. Authorities later discovered that he was driving despite being banned from doing so and was likely under the influence of drugs. A saliva test administered on the scene returned a positive result.
A 29-year-old man without a known residence was also in the vehicle as a passenger. He cooperated with the officers during the stop. However, police found illegal drugs in his suitcase and arrested him as well.
Both men were taken to a detention facility for questioning. Police are continuing their investigation into the assault on the officer and the drugs that were found.
