D66 leader denounces VVD-PVV coalition as 'failed experiment' at D66 congress
At the D66 party congress on Saturday, Rob Jetten, leader of the party, sharply criticized the Dutch government's coalition with the far-right Party for Freedom (PVV). Addressing a crowd in Breda, Jetten called the partnership between the VVD and PVV a "failed experiment" and accused the government of fostering chaos and accomplishing nothing, de Volkskrant reports.
In a passionate speech, Jetten took aim at the current state of national politics, particularly focusing on the leadership of VVD leader Yesilgoz and the handling of asylum and migration issues under Minister Faber. "We see chaos, we see infighting, but zero results. Absolutely nothing is being delivered," Jetten said. "It’s time for the VVD to apologize to the Netherlands for this massive mess and stagnation. Your experiment has failed miserably!"
The criticism came after what Jetten described as the VVD's irresponsible decision to collaborate with the PVV, which he argued had led to unprofessional and inappropriate behavior in government. "Wilders now controls our safety," Jetten added, referencing Geert Wilders, the leader of the PVV, whose influence on security policy in the country has sparked controversy.
The D66 leader emphasized the importance of building "ten new cities" and creating a "radically better government," focusing on reduced red tape and a fairer tax system. Jetten's proposals include reforming the Dutch tax administration to ensure more equitable taxation within the next decade.
The congress, themed "Freedom First," also featured performances and speeches, including an emotional appearance by Ukrainian Eurovision winner Jamala, who spoke about the horrors of living under constant air raids and expressed relief at being away from the war zone, even if just for a short while.
As the congress unfolded, many D66 members voiced their concerns about the state of democracy and the increasing pressure on the rule of law. The growing influence of populist politics in Europe was also a key topic, with some members emphasizing the need for a united, values-driven response from the European Union.
"The future of Europe is at stake, and D66 is committed to ensuring that Europe becomes the leader of the free world," said Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy, a member of the European Parliament, during his speech.
