Sint Maarten launches gun amnesty campaign to tackle illegal firearms
Sint Maarten authorities have launched a gun amnesty campaign in an effort to combat the growing problem of illegal firearms on the island. The campaign, a joint initiative by the police and the Public Prosecution Service, will allow individuals to surrender illegal firearms without fear of prosecution. This program, named "Stop, Drop and Go," is set to run from April 14 through May 2.
The amnesty campaign includes financial rewards for both weapons and tips that may help locate illegal firearms or ammunition. With the support of the Minister of Justice, the program offers compensation of up to 500 U.S. dollars for surrendered firearms or useful tips.
Illegal firearms have long been a significant issue on the island, with a record number of murders reported last year. Many other crimes are also committed using firearms. The authorities are hopeful that this initiative will reduce the number of illegal weapons circulating in the community, leading to an overall improvement in safety, including for police officers.
The process for submitting weapons is designed to be simple and non-intrusive. Police officers will not ask questions, and anonymity will be guaranteed unless the weapon can be linked to a crime. All surrendered weapons will undergo forensic investigation. To ensure safety, the weapon must be unloaded and placed in a sealed bag or box. Individuals who hand in a firearm will receive their reward without any need for identification.
