Two Aruban officers charged in fatal shooting of 19-year-old Ayden Lanoy

The Public Prosecution Service in Aruba has announced that two police officers will be prosecuted in connection with the death of 19-year-old Ayden Lanoy, who was killed during an arrest in early February, NOS reports. The officers are facing charges related to the fatal shooting that occurred after a police chase, sparking public outrage both in Aruba and among the Aruban community in the Netherlands.

The incident took place in the early morning hours of February 1, when police attempted to stop Lanoy, a student, for allegedly driving recklessly and without rear lights. Lanoy reportedly ignored the stop signal, prompting officers to initiate a chase. The pursuit ended in a dead-end street, where Lanoy attempted to flee on foot. According to the prosecution, the officers opened fire when Lanoy tried to escape.

A subsequent police investigation revealed that a total of 20 shots were fired during the incident. One of the bullets struck Lanoy, causing immediate and fatal injuries. The officers involved are now accused of complicity in manslaughter, as their actions led directly to the young man's death.

The shooting, which occurred near 5:00 AM, triggered widespread protests and calls for justice. In the days following the incident, security footage surfaced on social media, showing Lanoy’s car with its rear lights on during the pursuit, contradicting the initial police claim that the vehicle lacked functioning lights. This discovery led to significant criticism of the police handling of the situation.

Protests under the slogan "Justice for Ayden" have taken place both in Aruba and Rotterdam, where many members of the Aruban community live. The protests have called for accountability and transparency regarding the events surrounding Lanoy’s death.
