Large fires at motorcycle workshop, farmhouse cause stench issues in Zuid-Holland

Two large fires resulted in parts of Zuid-Holland dealing with stench issues on Tuesday evening. A motorcycle workshop went up in flames in Zoetermeer, and a monumental farmhouse burned down in the village of Driebruggen.

Complaints of a foul burning smell came in from Berkel en Rodenrijs, Bleiswijk, and Bergschenhoek, according to NOS. The stench could also be smelled further away, with reports in Alblasserdam and Sliedrecht. The local authorities issued an NL-Alert, urging locals to keep their windows and doors closed and shut off their ventilation.

The fire in the motorcycle workshop on Goudstraat in Zoetermeer started in the early evening. Firefighters and the owner saved some motorcycles, but the rest burned down with the building. The fire brigade let the building burn down in a controlled manner.

The cause of the fire is still unknown. No one got hurt.

Veiligheidsregio Haaglanden warned that the smoke caused by this blaze may contain soot particles, urging locals to stay out of the smoke. If soot ends up on skin or cars, for example, rinse it away with soap and water.

The farmhouse on Laageind in Driebruggen, a village between Woerden and Gouda, started about halfway through the evening. Firefighters tried to save the monumental thatched-roof building, but it was to no avail. Here, too, they let the building burn down in a controlled manner.

The cause of this fire is also still unclear. No one got hurt.
