Security measures tightened for Ajax-AZ match amid concerns over fan violence

Authorities have designated the area around the Johan Cruijff ArenA as a security risk zone from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, ahead of the Ajax-AZ match in Amsterdam. This measure allows police to conduct preventive searches to check for fireworks and other prohibited items.

Officials are concerned about "individuals and/or groups with heavy illegal fireworks," warning that this poses a serious risk of public disorder. The security risk zone includes the ArenA area, nearby surroundings, and metro stations Strandvliet and Bijlmer ArenA.

“The designation of a security risk zone contributes to ensuring a safe match day,” said a spokesperson for Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema.

Sunday’s heightened security comes after violent incidents during a previous match between Ajax and AZ in December. During that encounter, Ajax hooligans stormed a bar in Alkmaar where AZ supporters had gathered. The match also saw repeated instances of antisemitic chanting, prompting the Center for Information and Documentation on Israel (CIDI) to file a police report.

In response to those events, authorities have imposed restrictions on away supporters for Sunday's game. Only 600 AZ fans will be allowed to attend, with half of the away section remaining closed. Earlier this season, Ajax fans were not permitted to travel to Alkmaar for the corresponding fixture.
