Dutch gambling authority seizes tens of thousands in cash from illegal poker tournaments

The Kansspelautoriteit (Ksa), the Dutch gambling authority, has recently dismantled several illegal poker tournaments held across the Netherlands, seizing tens of thousands of euros in cash. The action took place during the last quarter of 2024 and involved six tournaments in major cities including Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Tilburg, Den Haag, and Asten. One of the locations alone contained 40,000 euros in cash.

In addition to the confiscated funds, the Ksa’s intervention led to the permanent closure of a hospitality venue in one of the raids, following a directive from the local municipality. The Ksa stressed that only Holland Casino, the state-owned operator, is permitted to host poker tournaments with cash prizes.

The Ksa’s efforts are part of a broader campaign to combat illegal gambling and the risks associated with unregulated poker games. According to the gambling authority, these tournaments typically circumvent gambling tax laws, and players face significant risks, including gambling addiction, especially when participating in high-stakes games in unregulated settings.

Only Holland Casino is authorized

Only Holland Casino, the state-run casino operator, is authorized to host poker tournaments where money can be won. All other tournaments offering monetary prizes or items that can be exchanged for money are prohibited, with the exception of private, family-oriented events.

“The illegal poker tournaments we uncover are often linked to organized crime, where criminal groups exploit legitimate businesses and individuals to further their operations,” said a Ksa spokesperson. “Our primary focus is not only preventing illegal gambling but also combating the underlying criminal activities that often accompany it.”

The Ksa has stepped up its efforts to curb illegal gambling in 2025, with an increased focus on collaboration with police and municipalities. The authority also intends to carry out more independent inspections to detect illegal poker tournaments and other unregulated gambling activities.

In addition to the seizures, the Ksa recently imposed a fine of up to 110,000 euros on an illegal poker organizer in an effort to deter further violations.
