Crisis continues for PSV with second loss to Go Ahead Eagles in a week; Feyenoord draw

PSV’s crisis showed no signs of stopping on Saturday when they lost to Go Ahead Eagles for the second time in a week. The Eindhovenaren gave away a 2-1 lead in Deventer, losing 3-2 due to a late winner from Oliver Antman. The Eindhovenaren now have an uphill battle to retain the Eredivisie title, as they are currently eight points behind Ajax.

Go Ahead had already beaten PSV on Wednesday in the semi-final of the KNVB Cup. Their fans sang “We are going to De Kuip” as they scored the opening goal through Victor Edvardsen. De Kuip is the stadium in Rotterdam that will host the KNVB Cup final.

PSV equalized six minutes after the goal when Oliver Boscagli’s cross was nodded into the net by Luuk de Jong at the far post. This was followed by a very fortunate deflection, which resulted in Noa Lang making it 2-1 four minutes later.

Go Ahead Eagles had a penalty overturned by VAR and a goal disallowed before they scored the 2-2 after all. A ball was headed on to Antman, who calmly side-footed it home. Antman also got the winning goal in the 87th minute, just a few minutes after he had missed a one-on-one with PSV keeper Walter Benitez.

Peter Bosz have now won just two of their last nine league matches. They will have to significantly improve their performance on Tuesday when they face English side Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League Quarter Finals.

Another of the big three in the Eredivisie that are struggling is Feyenoord. The Rotterdammers appointed former forward Robin van Persie as the new manager last week, but his first game on Saturday against NEC Nijmegen finished in a disappointing 0-0 draw. The Rotterdammers could consider themselves fortunate that their closest league rivals, AZ and FC Twente, also failed to win.

At the other end of the table, Sparta Rotterdam picked up a convincing 4-0 win against Willem II to drag Peter Maes’s team into the relegation battle. Sparta are still in the relegation playoff spot, but they are now only a point behind Willem II.
