PSV move six points clear after Feyenoord fall to NEC
Feyenoord were handed their third league defeat in their last four games on Sunday at home against NEC Nijmegen. Two late goals from Kento Shiogai gave Dick Shredder’s team the win in De Kuip. PSV, who picked up a hard-fought win over NAC Breda on Saturday, are now six points clear at the top of the table.
What should have been a proud day for the Van Persie family as Feyenoord manager Robin gave his son Shaquille his first spot in a first team squad started badly when the team went behind in the 37th minute. A shot from former Feyenoorder Bryan Linssen found its way into the goal.
Feyenoord turned the game around at this point. Leo Sauer headed the ball into the net in the dying seconds of the first half, before right back Bart Nieuwkoop chipped the ball into the goal from a pass by Anis Hadj Moussa.
NEC did not look good enough to trouble Feyenoord much, although this soon changed. Some poor defending from Van Persie’s side gave Noé Lebreton a free header to level the game at 2-2.
From this point, it was the Kento Shiogai show. The Japanese striker headed home in the 84th minute when once again the Feyenoord defense had done a poor marking job before hitting a goal of the season contender in injury time. A deflection put the ball in Shiogai’s path, and he hit a shot first time from around 40 yards, Feyenoord keeper Timon Wellenreuther, into the goal.
PSV had already done their job on Saturday. Guus Til continued to prove his worth as a striker, scoring a vital goal to give Peter Bosz’s side the win. Both sides are in European competition in midweek. PSV travel to Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League while Feyenoord host Scottish team Celtic in the UEFA Europa League.
At the other end of the table, Heracles’ incredible uptick in form continued with a 4-2 home win against Go Ahead Eagles. The team from Almelo has won their last three games, putting them level on points with NAC Breda, who are in the relegation playoff spot.
