Bike park at Utrecht CS reopens after cracks, leak force months-long closure
The bicycle parking on the Jaarbeursplein in Utrecht reopened on Friday after being closed for around four months. The first cyclists parked their bikes there again at 7:00 a.m., RTV Utrecht reports.
The bike park closed in October after cracks were found in the construction. Investigation showed that the cracks weren’t dangerous but revealed another issue. Water was found under the tiles of the city plateau directly above the bicycle shed. It involved rainwater that couldn’t drain away, which would eventually cause damage to the structure of the bike park.
That issue hasn’t been resolved, but the city opened the bike park while it figures it out. The municipality is also looking into recovering damages from the contractor who built the bike park.
Now that the Jaarbeursplein bike park is open again, the pop-up parking structure on the square will close. Cyclists have until Monday to remove their bikes from the pop-up structure. Any bicycles that remain will be taken to the bicycle depot at Koningin Wihleminalaan 2a.
