Dutch authorities help dismantle international cocaine smuggling ring
Dutch authorities played a crucial role in a major international law enforcement operation that led to the dismantling of a large-scale cocaine trafficking network. The operation, carried out on January 29, resulted in the arrest of five suspects across Germany, Poland, and the Netherlands. Police in Germany first released information about the case on Wednesday.
The investigation targeted a criminal network accused of smuggling cocaine into Europe. In total, police executed searches at 11 locations in the three countries where arrests took place.
During the operation, law enforcement seized firearms, nearly 500 rounds of ammunition, high-end vehicles, luxury watches, and large sums of cash. They also recovered several electronic devices and documents.
Four of the suspects were arrested during the operation, and one more was detained later the same day at Düsseldorf Airport. The operation netted two suspects in Poland and three in Germany. One suspect who initially evaded capture turned himself in to Dutch authorities on February 7.
The investigation began following the discovery of nearly two tons of cocaine at the Port of Hamburg in June 2023. This led to links being made between the current operation and an earlier investigation involving similar smuggling routes, which had previously resulted in several high-profile convictions.
The case is being led by the Hamburg Public Prosecutor’s Office, and is supported by the Joint Drug Investigation Group (GER) Karlsruhe, German authorities said.
