Elderly couple hit by delivery van while walking in Capelle aan den IJssel; Both died
A delivery van hit an 81-year-old woman and 80-year-old man walking in Capelle aan den IJssel on Wednesday evening. Both died at the scene. The police arrested the driver, an 18-year-old man, and are investigating what happened.
According to the Rotterdam police, the elderly couple was walking on Ketsendijk when they got hit by the car. First responders tried to resuscitate them, but it was to no avail. They died at the scene.
Rijnmond reported that the couple was walking their regular route home after attending a club night at the Westerkerk. They were crossing the street when the delivery van hit them. The man ended up quite a bit further on the road, and the woman landed at the bottom of the dike that runs along the road. The couple was from Capelle aan den IJssel.
The vehicle involved was an electric delivery van for a restaurant. An 18-year-old local was driving it. The police told Rijnmond that the young man was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The driver is still in custody for questioning. The police are still investigating how the accident happened and it is not yet known whether the young man is suspected of any criminal offenses.
