Prosecutors to appeal sentences in fatal stabbing at Solid Grooves festival

The Public Prosecution Service (OM) announced an appeal in the case of a fatal stabbing at the Solid Grooves festival in Amsterdam in the summer of 2023. The incident claimed the life of 21-year-old Jimmy Schepers. The court in Amsterdam handed down lighter sentences to the three defendants than those sought by the prosecution.

The primary suspect, Derzik H., 21, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for his role in the fatal stabbing, six years less than the 20 years requested by prosecutors. The court cited his young age and lack of prior convictions involving violence as mitigating factors. Two other defendants were sentenced to 1.5 years and six months in prison, respectively, significantly below the prosecution's demands of 4.5 years and 2 years.

Prior to the fatal altercation, an earlier dispute occurred between Schepers and a group led by H. A second confrontation escalated violently, during which Schepers was stabbed twice in the abdomen. He succumbed to his injuries later that evening at a hospital.

Schepers attended the festival at Donauweg in the Westelijk Havengebied of Amsterdam with his sister and her boyfriend. The event was marked by unrest and tension, exacerbated by overcrowding and inadequate security. The festival's organizer, ID&T, has admitted to organizational shortcomings.
