Andries Jonker to leave position as Dutch women's football team manager in the summer

Andries Jonker will no longer be the manager of the Netherlands women’s football team after this summer’s European Championships. The Dutch football association, the KNVB, reported that the expiring contract of the 62-year-old Amsterdammer will not be extended.

Jonker was appointed as the manager of the Oranje Leeuwinnen in August 2022. He replaced English manager Mark Parsons, who had been fired after disappointing performances at the European Championships.

The Oranje Leeuwinnen’s first tournament under Jonker was the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. The tournament resulted in elimination at the quarter-final stage after losing in extra time to the eventual winners, Spain. Oranje will face France, England, and Wales at the European Championships in Switzerland next summer.

“After an evaluation, it has been decided that after an impressive World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in which the team was knocked out by the eventual winners Spain after extra time and the upcoming European Championships in Switzerland, the time has come for a new phase,” the KNVB said in a statement.

Jonker worked as a manager and technical director at Telstar before becoming the manager of the Netherlands women’s team. He had also worked as manager of the men’s teams at MVV, Willem II, and VFL Wolfsburg. Jonker also worked as Louis van Gaal’s assistant at Bayern Munich and FC Barcelona.

“We want to express our gratitude and thanks for the work that Andries Jonker has done during his period as manager,” said Nigel de Jong, the director of Top-Level Football at the KNVB.

“He created a high-level sporting environment in which new international players have been given a chance. A period in which the football has improved over the last 2.5 years. We hope that we can achieve a nice and successful conclusion with the European Championship. We have every confidence in that,” De Jong’s statement read.

It has not yet been announced who will replace Jonker as manager.
