Suspects convicted in fatal stabbing at 2023 Amsterdam festival Solid Grooves

The District Court of Amsterdam has sentenced 21-year-old Derzik H. to 14 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of Jimmy Schepers during the Solid Grooves festival on May 28, 2023. H. was convicted of manslaughter, attempted manslaughter, aggravated assault, public violence, and violent robberies. Two co-defendants, Arginio E. and Guillermo G., were sentenced to 18 and 6 months in prison, respectively, for their involvement in the violence. The fight was reportedly over a pair of sunglasses.

The attack began after a verbal altercation between H.’s group and Schepers, who had attended the festival with friends. The dispute quickly escalated when H. and his companions—Arginio E. and Guillermo G.—used violence against Jimmy and three others. H. fatally stabbed Schepers twice with a knife. Two other victims were also injured with knife wounds, and a fourth victim was struck. Prior to the assaults, H. had robbed two individuals at knifepoint.

The Amsterdam court took into account the impact the violence had on other festivalgoers. Solid Grooves, typically a place for celebration, was turned into a scene of chaos and fear. Many festival attendees felt unsafe due to the unexpected and violent confrontation.

The court emphasized that the events at the festival, culminating in Schepers’ death, warranted a lengthy prison sentence. The crime was particularly severe because it unfolded in a public setting, leaving victims and witnesses traumatized by the violence. During a preliminary hearing in the summer of 2023, all three suspects denied involvement in Schepers's murder.

At the time of the stabbing, the maximum sentence for manslaughter was 15 years in prison. Typically, sentences for manslaughter range between 8 and 12 years. The court noted that H. was 20 years old at the time of the crime and has mild intellectual disabilities. After considering these factors, the court imposed a 14-year prison sentence for H.

Arginio E., 22, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for his involvement in the public violence against Schepers and the other victims. E. did not stab anyone but played a significant role in the altercation. He also faced charges for threats and two violent robberies committed during the festival. The court noted that while first-time offenders typically receive community service for public violence, the severity of the incident, combined with the threats and robberies, warranted a prison sentence.

Guillermo G., also 22, was sentenced to 6 months in prison for his part in the public violence. While G. did not cause any injuries or stab any victims, the court determined his contribution to the violent events justified the sentence.

The Public Prosecution Service (OM) had originally demanded a 20-year prison sentence for Derzik H.. They argued that a lengthy sentence was necessary due to the severity of the crime, the public nature of the violence, and the trauma caused to other festivalgoers. .

Defendants and prosecutors can each file appeals against a conviction or a sentence issued in a criminal case by a Dutch district court. Both sides typically have 14 days to file their appeal.
