Freezing temperatures spark local ice skating opportunities in the Netherlands

Freezing temperatures are set to grip parts of the Netherlands overnight, with lows dipping well below freezing in the eastern and southern regions, WeerOnline reports. In some areas, conditions may allow for skating on local ice and skeeler tracks Tuesday morning, though the frost will not be sufficient for widespread skating, meteorologists warn.

Temperatures are forecast to drop to between -4 and -7 degrees in regions including Twente, Gelderland, Noord-Brabant, and Limburg, with southern Limburg potentially seeing lows of -8 degrees. Isolated pockets could experience "severe frost," with temperatures plunging below -10 degrees, according to meteorological reports.

"On flooded tracks in the east and south, there’s a possibility that skating will be possible tomorrow morning," experts at WeerOnline noted. However, they cautioned that enthusiasts must seize the opportunity early, as temperatures are expected to climb to 3 or 4 degrees in the afternoon, likely melting the ice.

This marks only the second significant frost of the winter season, which has arrived later than usual. Last Saturday, temperatures dipped below -5 degrees for the first time this season, with Eelde recording a low of -6.0 degrees. Similar frosty conditions were observed in Wijk aan Zee, Deelen, Gilze-Rijen, Woensdrecht, and Eindhoven.

Despite the current cold snap, skating on natural ice on larger waterways, such as canals or ponds, remains out of reach. Meteorologists strongly advised against attempting to skate on thin ice covering shallow water bodies, noting that conditions remain unsafe.

The first local frost occurred Saturday night when Twente reported a low of -5.2 degrees. With another widespread freeze expected overnight, meteorologists anticipate significant regional variation in minimum temperatures.

"This cold night is unfortunately not a signal of longer-term freezing weather," weather experts explained. By Wednesday, milder conditions are expected to return as clouds, fog, and mist keep overnight lows above freezing.

Although nighttime freezing may resume briefly on Friday, forecasts suggest temperatures will only dip slightly below zero, offering limited opportunities for further ice formation.
