Two people lose their lives in car crashes due to slippery weather; dozens injured
Two people lost their lives as a result of car crashes this morning. The slippery weather also led to many people getting injured throughout the country in traffic incidents, NOS reported.
A driver passed away this morning when his car hit a tree between Rossum and Ootmarsum. The 48-year-old man from Hengelo went off the N736 road on the Oldenzaalstraat at around 5 a.m. It was announced at the end of the morning that the man had passed away.
The second fatal accident of the morning occurred on the Zuider Kanaalweg in Musselkanaal, Groningen. The driver was 57-years-old. The person’s car ended up in the water. The road had not been gritted leading to three accidents in the span of a kilometer, according to RTV Noord.
The National Weather Institute KNMI had issued a code yellow for the morning. This was initially only for the east and northern parts of the country, but it was extended to the whole country by 09:30 a.m. The warning has now been taken down.
An accident involving several vehicles resulted in the A27 motorway going towards Almere being closed by Eemnes. The connecting road on the A1 towards Almere/Baarn from Amsterdam is also closed. The accident occurred at around 8:40 a.m., involving several vehicles colliding near the entrance to the A1.
Many hospitals were busy treating the wounded of the accidents. The emergency department of the Martini Hospital in Groningen treated 25 in the morning with bone breaks due to falling or accidents.
These were mainly people who had fallen off of their bikes, and many had broken their wrists, but some also sustained leg and pelvic fractures. “There are also people who had fallen on their head and were worried about it.”
Other hospitals also reported being busier than usual. The Treant Hospital in Emmen had ten people come in with bone fractures. Six people came into the basic emergency post in Hoogeveen. These people fell with their bikes or slipped on the sidewalk, according to a spokesperson.
