Specialist police team sets new record with 153 fugitives apprehended in 2024

The FastNL team, which specializes in capturing most-wanted criminals, has made a record number of arrests in 2024. According to figures shared with NPO Radio 1’s Het Misdaadbureau podcast, 153 fugitives were apprehended this year, marking a significant increase from the previous year.

The total number of arrests this year surpasses last year’s figure of 128, indicating a noticeable uptick in the team's success. FastNL's operations continue to focus on fugitives who have committed serious crimes, such as drug trafficking, organized crime, and violent offenses.

FastNL's efforts have resulted in the capture of individuals who were still facing sentences totaling over 300 more days in prison. This year's total includes 70 arrests in the Netherlands and 83 abroad, bringing the total number of apprehensions to a level equal to the previous record set in 2021.

One of the latest captures was that of 28-year-old Marouane L., who was arrested in Heerlen, Limburg, earlier this week. He still faces 506 more days in prison. Marouane L. had been linked to several criminal activities, including involvement in large-scale cannabis cultivation, drug trafficking, and possession of weapons. His arrest was a significant win for the FastNL team, who have been tracking him for some time.

“We are pleased with this year’s results. The increase in arrests shows the commitment and effectiveness of the FastNL team in bringing these criminals to justice, both domestically and abroad,” a spokesperson for the team stated.

Marouane L. and his associates, including his brother and nephew, had been under investigation for their roles in the illegal drug trade. Their operations were part of a larger network involved in the production and distribution of narcotics across the Netherlands and beyond. Authorities had been tracking their activities for months before executing the arrest in Limburg.
