EOD dismantles fireworks buried near Willem II stadium after match
The Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit dismantled five buried fireworks shells Sunday night near the Willem II stadium in Tilburg. The discovery was made after the Willem II-NEC football match, following a tip from local residents. The incident occurred on vacant land across from the stadium.
Before the match, neighbors observed unidentified individuals burying pipes in the ground. "They trusted the situation enough to report it," said a police spokesperson. Officers responded, finding materials that warranted further investigation.
A police bomb squad assessed the risk and called in the EOD. Using a specialized robotic camera system, experts confirmed that the buried items were high-grade fireworks shells. "The situation was serious enough to handle cautiously," added officials.
The fireworks were neutralized and safely removed from the site. A specialized waste company took charge of their destruction. Authorities sealed off the area, and during the investigation, a suspect approached officers, allegedly trying to recover the fireworks. The individual was immediately detained for questioning.
