FC Twente disappoint in 0-1 home loss against Union Saint Gilloise

FC Twente put in a disappointing performance on Thursday night in their home match against Belgian team Union Saint Gilloise in the UEFA Europa League. The Tukkers never got going in the match and lost due to a goal from Mohammed Fuseini.

Ricky van Wolfswinkel was given a starting spot in the Twente side by manager Joseph Oosting. He was given the spot over Sam Lammers. A part of the Grolsch Veste stadium was closed to the crowd. This was a punishment by UEFA after a Lazio player received racist comments in the stadium in a previous match.

Twente did not play well in the first half, and it led to the Belgian team going into the break a goal up. The club from Enschede had already been warned when Saint Gilloise had a goal disallowed for offside in the first half, but they did not heed this warning as the away team scored minutes later.

Left-back Ousseynou Niang played the pass through to Mohammed Fuseini, who made no mistake with the finish, hitting it through the legs of Twente keeper Lars Unnerstal. This goal was also checked for offside, but sadly for Twente, Fuseini had kept his run.

Twente manager Joseph Oosting made several changes at halftime, and this almost resulted in a goal in the early stages. A corner was knocked down to Mitchell van Bergen in the box, but his shot was blocked.

This then led to a dangerous counterattack from the Belgian visitors, which was ended by a good save from Unnerstal to prevent Franjo Ivanovic from scoring.

Twente never looked like scoring as the only remaining chance in the match was another save from Unnerstal, who stopped Gilloise substitute Kevin Rodriguez from scoring when the winger had burst down the wing.

This was Gilloise’s first win of their Europa League campaign and it puts them above Twente who are still winless in the competition. They are currently 29th out of the 36 teams with three points won.
