Police find massive 10,000 kg of illegal fireworks in Hague residential neighborhood
The police discovered around 10,000 kilograms of fireworks in a residential neighborhood in the center of The Hague on Thursday. It took the police well into the night to remove the enormous amount.
The police found the massive amount of fireworks inside a business premises on Volkerakstraat, under a row of apartments, at around 9:00 p.m. Officers carried out box after box of fireworks, loading them into a police truck and removing them from the site.
Police officers carted off around 10,000 kilograms of fireworks, a police spokesperson told Omroep West. That is the largest catch of the year so far. Earlier this week, the police found 5,500 kilograms of fireworks in Krimpen aan den IJssel and then spoke of a “massive” catch.
The fireworks were taken away to be destroyed at a safe location. A suspect was arrested not long after the discovery. He is in custody for questioning, the police spokesperson told the broadcaster.
The police are relieved to have found and removed the fireworks before an accident happened. “If that goes off, you have a completely different and much bigger problem,” the spokesperson said.
