Suspect arrested for Oisterwijk art theft in which two Warhol "Queens" were stolen

The police arrested a 23-year-old man for involvement in a burglary at an art gallery in Oisterwijk on Friday in which two artworks by Andy Warhol were stolen. It is unclear whether the art was recovered.

The thieves set off an explosion at the MPV Gallery on Dorpsstraat in Oisterwijk early on Friday morning and tried to steal the four artworks of Warhol’s Reigning Queens series, which were on display at the gallery.

They managed to make off with two of them - the British Queen Elizabeth and Queen Margrethe of Denmark. The portraits of Queen Beatrix and Queen Ntombi Twala were recovered at the gallery, both still in their frames, a spokesperson for the gallery previously said.

The police immediately launched an investigation. On Tuesday, officers raided several locations in Berkel-Enschot, Den Bosch, Oisterwijk, and just across the Belgian border. The 23-year-old suspect was arrested during the raid in Berkel-Enschot.

The man is in restricted custody, which means that he is only allowed contact with his lawyer. The police did not provide any further details.
