Two truck drivers arrested in crash that left two dead, one hurt on A4 near Woensdrecht
Two people died in a car accident Friday morning on the A4 near Woensdrecht, police reported. A third individual travelling in their vehicle sustained serious injuries and was taken to the hospital. Two truck drivers suspected of involvement in the accident were arrested on suspicion of negligence that led to injury or death.
"A 45-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man did not survive the accident. A 19-year-old man was injured and was taken to hospital," police wrote in an update. All three of them were identified as residents of Oud-Beijerland, part of the Hoeksche Waard municipality just south of Rotterdam.
The accident happened around 8:15 a.m., with all three victims reportedly traveling in the same vehicle. Police are still investigating the cause of the accident. Initial findings suggest the vehicle may have collided with a truck parked on the shoulder.
Due to the accident, traffic heading from Antwerp to Rotterdam on the A4 faced significant delays. By midday, vehicles near Stabroek encountered backups, with wait times extending to over 45 minutes. The right lane near the Markiezaat junction remained closed.
The accident remained under investigation. "The police would like to get in touch with witnesses or people who have camera footage of this collision," police said.
