First overnight frost of the season; Temps dropped to -0.8°C in Eelde
The first local overnight frost of the autumn is a fact. Temperatures dropped to -0.8 degrees at a height of 1.5 meters in Eelde overnight, Weeronline reports. On average, the first below-zero temperatures at this height occur on October 23.
The last overnight frost was on April 23 in Wijk aan Zee (-3.5 degrees) and Eelde (-3.4 degrees). The first frost on the ground of the autumn happened on September 13 in Twente (-0.3 degrees).
The first local frost occurred a bit earlier than usual. In the current climate, temperatures dip below zero at 1.5 meters for the first time on average on October 23. The earliest first overnight frost ever recorded was on 15 September 1971, when temps dropped to -01 degrees in Deelen, Gelderland.
Last year, it took until 12 November for the first local frost to occur (-0.8 degrees in Ell, Limburg). In 2000, the first overnight frost was extraordinarily late, only happening on December 16 (-1.8 degrees in Gilze-Rijen). Temperatures dropped below zero at the national weather station in De Bilt the next day, making it the latest official frost day ever.
