Video: Explosive detonated at asylum center in Apeldoorn neighborhood
An explosive was detonated at the still uninhabited emergency shelter in Ugchelen in Apeldoorn overnight. Locals in several locations in Apeldoorn and Ugchelen heard a loud bang. The blast caused considerable damage to the building, an abandoned school, Omroep Gelderland reports.
Journalists at the scene report that windows are shattered, the hall is strewn with glass, and the facade is charred black. A small fire broke out after the bang, but it was already out when the fire brigade arrived.
Only a security guard was present at the building at the time of the explosion. He was uninjured.
The police are investigating what happened.
The abandoned school building was set to temporarily shelter 100 asylum seekers from Friday.
According to Omroep Gelderland, the shelter caused considerable unrest among locals, especially parents with children in the adjacent primary school. On Tuesday, someone hung banners against the shelter on the empty building.
