Feyenoord beat FC Twente 2-1 to climb to fifth in the Eredivisie table
Feyenoord beat FC Twente 2-1 in the Kuip on Sunday to climb to fifth in the Eredivisie table. Hwang In-Beom scored the decisive goal after Ayase Ueda had given the Rotterdammers the lead. Sem Steijn got a goal back for Twente, but Feyenoord held on for the win.
Brian Priske made no changes compared to the team that beat Girona in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday. Joseph Oosting made one change to the Twente team that drew against Fenerbahce on Thursday; Daan Rots came into the team to replace Ricky van Wolfswinkel.
Timon Wellenreuther had to make his first save of the game after a minute played. Daan Rots headed a corner from Michel Vlap toward goal, but the German was able to claw the effort away.
The home side took the lead in the 28th minute. Hwang In-Beom played the ball into the path of left-back Hugo Bueno. The Portuguese defender played a fantastic cross into the box, which Ayase Ueda headed into the net.
Feyenoord made it 2-0 shortly before halftime. Twente goalkeeper Lars Unnerstal made a mistake with his long ball going straight to Ibrahim Osman. This resulted in the next pass being deflected by a Twente defender to Hwang at the edge of the area. He took one touch before hitting his shot straight into the bottom corner.
Twente was all over the place and was very fortunate not to go into the break with a three-goal deficit. Quinten Timber played Ueda through, but his shot went far over the goal, to the dismay of the crowd in the Kuip.
There were few chances throughout the match as it was a scrappy game by two teams who may have been feeling fatigued after their matches in European competition in midweek.
Oosting’s side got a goal back in the 79th minute. Bas Kuipers put a low cross into the box, which was met by Sem Steijn, who smashed it into the net via the underside of the crossbar with an unstoppable shot. It was Steijn’s seventh goal of the season.
Feyenoord was able to hang on despite Twente’s efforts to equal the match. The Rotterdammers went above Go Ahead Eagles into fifth spot. Priske’s side also has a game in hand, with the grudge match against Ajax still to be played.
Twente is one point ahead of Feyenoord in fourth. They face RKC Waalwijk, who is bottom of the league table, in their next game after the international break.
