Amsterdam ranks 12th best student city in Europe, top marks for cultural diversity

Amsterdam was one of three Dutch cities to land on The Campus Advisor’s list of the 50 best student cities in Europe this year. The capital landed in 12th place overall, but also took first place in the category of Cultural Diversity.

Prague picked up first place as the best student city in Europe, followed by the German city of Heidelberg, Galway in Ireland, the Hungarian capital of Budapest, and Granada, Spain. Amsterdam was pipped by Vienna, Austria in 11th, but beat Brno in the Czech Republic..

The northern Dutch city of Groningen took 24th place behind the Lithuanian capital Vilnius, and above Zurich, Switzerland. Delft was the third Dutch place to make its way on the list. The Zuid-Holland city wound up in 49th place behind Graz, Austria. The German city of Mannheim rounded out the top 50.

Amsterdam beat out Lodon, Heidelberg, Newcastle and Berlin, the five cities which ranked highest for cultural diversity. Groningen wound up in third in the ranking of the top five safest cities. That was led by Zurich and Warsaw, with Galway and Heidelberg in fourth and fifth.

Apart from the “cultural diversity,” the student survey participants could also evaluate their cities based on the following categories: academic excellence, where London ranked first, student Friendliness was led by Galway, and the Hungarian city of Pecs led the Cost of Living list. Newcastle held the top spot for nightlife, Heidelberg ranked first for amenities, and Vienna was the leader for public transport.

A popular website among students, The Campus Advisor list was released this week. The annual report was based on 17,000 independent student reviews.

“We are excited to share our ranking of the best student cities in Europe for 2024. This list represents the voices of thousands of students who have provided honest feedback about their experiences,” commented a spokesperson for The Student Advisor.

“We are committed to continually gathering and analyzing data collected from students to provide the most relevant and valuable insights. These rankings serve as an important resource for students seeking the ideal educational environment and help them better prepare for the next chapter in their lives.”
