Ajax transfers Steven Bergwijn to Saudi team Al-Ittihad for €21 million

Steven Bergwijn will be transferring to Saudi Arabia. Ajax reached a transfer agreement with Al-Ithad just before the transfer window closed for clubs in both countries. Ajax will receive over 21 million euros from the Saudi Arabian club for the transfer, the Amsterdam club announced.

“Steven and Ajax have made no secret of the fact that if a good offer came from abroad, he would make the move,” said Alex Kroes, Ajax’s technical director. “That has now happened at the last minute, giving the club the necessary financial flexibility to hopefully bring in a suitable replacement in the short term.”

“We have wished our captain from last season much success in the next stage of his career," Kroes said.

Bergwijn was born and raised in Amsterdam and followed Ajax’s youth academy. He joined Ajax from the English club Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2022. His contract was due to run until 30 June 2027. He played 80 matches for Ajax’s first team and scored 29 goals.
