Many children currently infected with impetigo

Many children are currently suffering from impetigo, an inflammation of the skin characterized by red spots or blisters with yellow crusts. Research institution Nivel, which registers the data from general practitioners, has no explanation for the increase but did say that this often happens in the summer.

Around 500 of every 100,000 children four years or younger went to their GP with impetigo last week. This is the highest number of registered impetigo infections in the previous few years. General practitioners saw around 400 in the 100,000 children come to them with impetigo in September last year.

Furthermore, approximately 300 of the 100,000 children aged 5 to 14 with impetigo went to a GP, which is the same as last year's peak.
