Fewer people are seeking asylum in the Netherlands

Fewer asylum seekers came to the Netherlands last week than last year. This is the eighth week in a row that the inflow has been lower than in the same week a year ago. However, there were significantly more applications in the last months of last year and the first months of this year.

In the last few weeks, a rounded number of 800 asylum requests were registered. Last year, there were 1,100 requests in the same week and 1,200 in 2022.

Since the start of this year, 26,000 requests have been noted. This is quite an increase from last year and the year before, but the difference is getting smaller every week. In 2022 and 2023, the count was around 24,000 requests.

Exactly how many asylum requests have been submitted is unknown, as the weekly numbers provided by the Ministry of Asylum and Migration are rounded to the nearest hundred. This includes not only new requests but also relatives who have been given permission to follow the asylum seekers to the Netherlands.

The numbers also include people who have made another asylum request when they were not granted one in the past.
