The number of burglaries in the Netherlands decreased again in the last six months

There was an average of 58 burglaries daily in houses in the first six months of the year. This is nearly the lowest number since 2012, when the police started keeping track of these numbers. Only the first half of 2021 had fewer break-ins, around 54 a day, but there were strict coronavirus measures, which resulted in people staying home at the time. This was shown by an analysis performed by ANP based on the new statistics provided by the police.

The police noted 10,500 break-ins in the first six months of the year, a little less than in the same period last year when this happened a total of 10,800 times. Compared to the number of inhabitants, burglaries occurred most often in Noord-Brabant and Flevoland. These are also the only provinces where the number of break-ins was higher in the year's first half than in 2023. The number dropped in the other provinces.

Of the municipalities, the most burglaries happened in Laren in Noord-Holland. Bergeijk, in Brabant followed along with Oegstgeest in Zuid-Holland and Renswoude in Utrecht.

The number of burglaries has dropped sharply in the last decade. In 2012, the police counted 44,000 break-ins, and the number dropped to 18,000 in 2019.

Since the first coronavirus year of 2020, the number of home burglaries per six months has fluctuated around 10,000.
