Exit Poll latest: Netherlands sending three new parties to European Parliament
The European election results will mean quite a bit of shuffling for the Dutch representatives in the European Parliament. Three Dutch parties will enter the European Parliament for the first time, and three are disappearing. The PVV will also delegate significantly more MEPs.
GroenLiks-PvdA will be the biggest Dutch parity in the European Parliament with eight seats, down one from what the two left-wing parties won in the 2019 elections. The PVV goes from one seat to six, according to ANP’s prognosis based on the results submitted by the Dutch municipalities.
Newcomers are Volt (2 seats), BBB (2), and NSC (1). Parties that lost their seats are FvD (-4), ChristenUnie (-1), and 50Plus (-1). The SGP and PvdD retain one seat each.
According to an Ipsos I&O poll on election day in the Netherlands, migration was the biggest concern for Dutch voters. That is reflected in the big win for Geert Wilders’ anti-immigration PVV. Healthcare was the second biggest concern - surprising, given that national governments have much more influence on this topic than the EU.
GroenLinks-PvdA leader Frans Timmermans said the strong results for his party and pro-European parties like Volt show “a majority in the Netherlands wants to strengthen Europe and certainly not destroy it.”
In one unusual moment, a locked safe led to delays processing the vote totals from Waadhoeke, Friesland. The votes were counted after polling places in the Netherlands closed on Friday, but they were not sent on to the elections team at ANP. Instead, the results were locked up at the town hall, which was secured by alarm systems during the weekend.
On Monday morning, the tally was submitted, showing that GroenLinks-PvdA won 19.1 percent of the vote there, more than any other party. Voter turnout rose from 41 percent five years ago to over 45 percent this year.
Popularity surged for the PVV which jumped from 3.2 percent of the vote in the town in 2019, to 16.4 percent in 2024. About 14.7 percent voted for CDA.
