European Commissioner Frans Timmermans wants to succeed Jean-Claude Juncker as president of the European Commission. He will officially announce his candidacy later this week, NOS reports.
PVV-leader Geert Wilders finds the latest anti-Semitic statements of French Front National party-founder Jean-Marie Le Pen, "disgusting," he told newswire ANP. Wilders still gave Le Pen some benefit of the doubt, when he said, “If the statements were truly made, and meant [in that way], they are without a doubt disgusting which I have already mentioned to Front National.” He did not want to give further explanation according to the ANP.
The D66 received the most votes in the European elections, but the CDA won the most seats. The votes were close, but the D66 won with 15.4 percent, four seats, against 15 percent for CDA, five seats. This difference is explained by the CDA partnering up with ChristenUnie/SGP.
After the European elections, Prime Minister Mark Rutte wants to decide a limit of five tasks for the EU, to perform over the next five years. He wants to discuss his "priority agenda" next week Tuesday during a dinner where heads of state and government leaders will discuss the new president of the European Commission.
