Brazil will host 2027 Women’s World Cup, beating Dutch, German Belgian joint bid

The Netherlands lost the bid to host the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2027. The football tournament will happen in Brazil. The Brazillian bid got more votes (119) than the joint bid by the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany (78) at the FIFA congress in Bangkok on Thursday.

The 2027 tournament will be the first Women’s World Cup organized in South America and will be played in well-known Brazilian stadiums like Maracana in Rio de Janeiro and Mané Garrincha in Brasilia.

“We have achieved a victory for the world, but especially for women’s football,” a Brazilian delegate said after the vote, according to ANP. “We knew it would be difficult, but we are united and therefore successful.”

The Netherlands’ joint bid had already received a slightly lower assessment from FIFA last week, NOS reports. The Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany hoped that their bid, titled Breaking New Ground, would win votes because of the short travel distances between the 13 host cities.

The Netherlands last hosted a major football tournament in 2017 with the European Championship for women. The Oranje Lionesses won that tournament. In 2021, the Netherlands organized four matches during the European Championship for men and the final round of the Nations League for men was held in Rotterdam and Enschede last year.
