Princess Amalia will be reimbursed for expenses up to €1.5 million from 2025
Princess Amalia will begin accepting reimbursement for her expenses in her role as the heir to the throne. She was allowed to claim up to 1,509,000 euros for expenses this year, and 322,000 euros in salary. Both figures are adjusted annually for inflation.
She has been legally entitled to receive both payments tax free after she turned 18 in December 2021. However, she said earlier that year that she would decline that compensation unless her costs related to her position escalated. She said that is now the case, noting extraordinary situations, but without specifically mentioning she lived abroad for over a year after credible threats against her materialized.
“With the passage of time and after surprising circumstances, it is now foreseeable that I will have to take into account personnel and material expenses with a view to an independent and autonomous fulfillment of my position, including administrative staff, and reservations for a living and working accommodation,” she wrote in a letter to Prime Minister Mark Rutte on Tuesday.
She said she will still refuse to accept her salary until her studies have concluded. She is currently a student at the University of Amsterdam in the interdisciplinary Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics program.
Rutte forwarded her letter, and his response, to the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Parliament. He replied saying he understood, and wished her success with her studies. He told Parliament that the budget for Amalia’s expenses will be included as an earmark when the national budget is presented in September.
Amalia earns far less than her father, King Willem-Alexander. His salary this year is set at just under 1.1 million euros, with just over 5.7 million euros possible for expenses. Queen Máxima claims 431,000 euros as a salary, and up to 743,000 euros for expenses. As the former queen, Princess Beatrix collects 614,000 euros in salary, and more than 1.2 million for expenses.
In 2024, the Cabinet budgeted 11.64 million in payments to the four members of the royal family, noting that Amalia had refused the entirety of the 1.83 million allocated for her. The four of them are the only members of the royal family entitled to a salary and expense compensation.
