Woman's death in Amsterdam city center home a possible murder case, police say

Police in Amsterdam were investigating the death of a 56-year-old woman, whose remains were found in a city center home on Saturday afternoon. The woman was found dead on Nieuwendijk after a well-being check towards the end of the afternoon, and investigators believe a crime was involved in her death.

"Around 5 p.m., the police entered the home and the body was found under suspicious circumstances. From that moment on, the home has been a crime scene and several specialist teams arrived to investigate," police said in a statement on Sunday.

Police were not willing to release crime scene details that led them to believe that the situation was suspicious. Investigators were hesitant to reveal a cause of death or a possible motive that could have led to a crime.

The investigation into the case was expanded with the inclusion of a specialized TGO Team. The police said this calls for an "acute approach to complex criminal investigations, which, due to their major social impact, require the deployment of an expert and expansive team." The TGO Team is managed jointly by the police and Public Prosecution Service.

Police officers were still canvassing the neighborhood around the home, located on a popular shopping street, to find more leads about the possible crime. Authorities asked anyone with information about the case, or camera footage from the area, to contact investigators immediately.
