Celebrations start in Eindhoven after PSV wins championship; One wounded from fireworks

The party started in Eindhoven after PSV's 4-2 victory over Sparta, where the men's team took home the Eredivisie football championship. Tens of thousands of people watched the match in the city center on big screens in the streets and at cafes. At least one person was seriously injured during the celebration in an incident involving fireworks.

It was the 25th national title for PSV. A stage was already under construction for a ceremony to honor the team's achievement, which will take place at City Hall on Monday.

The crowds were already so large on Markt and the 18 Septemberplein that people were no longer allowed into the area while the match was being played. Stratumseind was also closed, one of the city's largest nightlife streets.

Many of them answered the call to wear red clothes, and the atmosphere was generally pleasant during the match, with a great deal of singing and fireworks being set off at varying moments.

After the match came to a satisfying end for the fans, it turned into "one big party," a police spokesperson said. Instead of entering the city center, the municipality asked people to celebrate in other parts of the city.

People shouted, "We are the champions!" on Stratumseind, after the final whistle, a reporter from ANP observed. Many cafes on Stratumseind had television screens outside and the street was packed with people. Several beer were thrown in the air, as were flares.

One man suffered a serious injury due to an incident involving a fireworks explosion. He was transported to an area hospital to treat his badly wounded hand, a police spokesperson said.

The man picked up a fireworks item because he thought it was a flare that had landed on the ground. It exploded in his hand, she confirmed. The incident happened during the celebrations after PSV's victory over Sparta.
