Research shows more people insuring their e-bikes

Owners of electric bikes are insuring their vehicles more often, market researcher Multiscope reported based on a study of over 5,500 Dutch people. Electric bicycle owners took out insurance worth 621 million euros in 2023. This is 71 million euros more than the year before.

The researchers claim that 62 percent of all owners insured their e-bikes. They paid around 14 euros a month to do so, which is the same as last year. The chance that the bike is stolen is a reason to have it insured, said Multiscope. Six percent of owners reported a prior theft of their e-bike.

The market research bureau reported that people with electric hybrid bikes took out the most insurance. Over two in three of these bikes are insured.

Insured people with a fatbike spend the highest average monthly insurance premiums, at 23 euros. The ANWB and Univé stopped insuring electric bikes with fat tires because they are stolen relatively often.

Despite no longer insuring fatbikes, the ANWB sold the most insurance policies covering e-bikes. Multiscope said the ANWB insures 35 percent of electronic bikes. Insurers ENRA and Kingpolis have 15 and 12 percent of the market, respectively. Half of all insurance is taken out online.
