PSV could become national champions on May 5

PSV could become the national champions on Sunday, May 5. The Eindhoven team beat SC Heerenveen 8-0 on Thursday and could’ve immediately become national champions if Feyenoord played badly. But that didn’t happen. The Rotterdam team beat Go Ahead Eagles 1-3.

With three rounds to go, the difference between the two clubs in the rankings remains 9 points. But PSV has a much better goal difference (+86 to +56), though that has not yet earned coach Peter Bosz’s team more than an unofficial title.

PSV needs a draw in the home match against Sparta on May 5 to win the 25th national title in club history and the first since 2018. The supporters can then have a long celebration because the match in the Philips stadium starts at 12:15 p.m.

PSV’s 8-0 win against SC Heerenveen in Friesland was a record for the Eindhoven team. PSV has never won an away match with a difference of eight goals in the Eredivisie, though it has won three times with seven goals. That happened on 19 September 1971 at FC Den Bosch (0-7), 26 February 1978 at FC Amsterdam (0-7), and 15 September at ADO Den Haag (0-7).

Coach Peter Bosz was amazed by the match. “It was insanely good. I just stood around clapping at halftime. It was such a high level,” he said afterward.

PSV already led 5-0 at halftime and then quickly expanded the lead. “If they wanted to pin us down at times, we just got out from under it,” said Bosz. “I think it is clear who is the best. We have surpassed the away match against AZ in December. Now, we held on for the entire match and did not slow down. We were able to combine two good things: a result coupled with good football.”

Captain Luuk de Jong scored the seventh goal. “I enjoyed being on the field today,” he said. “When Bosz started with us, you listened to his vision and what he had to say. Then I thought: that could fit together.”
