Icy roads trigger code yellow warning; Be extra careful on bridges, viaducts

Icy roads are causing dangerous driving conditions in the Netherlands on Tuesday morning. The meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning, urging road users to drive extra carefully, especially on bridges and viaducts.

The code yellow warning applies to the entire country, except for the Wadden islands. The KNMI warned that icy parts of the roads could be difficult to see. “Drive slowly and keep a safe following distance,” the meteorological institute said. The iciness on the roads should melt away by mid-morning. The weather warning is in effect until 10:00 a.m.

Rijkswaterstaat and the travelers’ association ANWB also warned road users to be extra careful on Tuesday morning.

At 7:10 a.m., the Rijkswaterstaat reported no significant incidents yet, but the morning rush hour was starting earlier than usual. “Like is often the case, that is noticeable around Rotterdam. The biggest delay is also before the Van Brienenoordbrug (A16) toward the north. There you’ll be stuck for 30 minutes in traffic,” the public works department said.

The ANWB reported 44 traffic jams covering 241 kilometers of Dutch roads at 7:22 a.m.

Tuesday started mostly cloudy, with wintry showers in the northern half of the country. Some places may get wet snow or hail. This afternoon will be mostly dry, and the sun will peek through the clouds in many places. Maximums will climb to around 4 degrees, with a moderate westerly wind.
