Coronavirus record broken again as infections near 103,000

A new record was again set for most new coronavirus infections in a single day, with preliminary data from public health agency RIVM recording 2,364 more infections on Wednesday. Amsterdam (260), Rotterdam (155) and The Hague (127) accounted for about a fourth of all new infections.

Over 102,700 people in the country have tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection since the end of February, though RIVM leader Jaap van Dissel said it was more likely that a million people in the Netherlands have been infected to date. Van Dissel, GGD Hollands Midden Director Sjaak de Gouw, and Health Minister Hugo de Jonge have all said this week that the Netherlands has entered the second wave of infections.

De Jonge said he did not thing that the second wave of Covid-19 hospitalizations has started just yet, though the total number of current patients doubled in a week to 420 on Tuesday.

Another 32 more hospitalizations were linked to Covid-19, the respiratory illness caused by the virus, The RIVM data showed. Five more deaths were also tied to the viral infection.
