Roads, stops closed to motorcycle riders over Easter weekend

During the upcoming Easter weekend, several popular stops and smaller roads will be closed to motorcycle riders and cyclists, the safety regions decided after groups of motorcyclists were spotted out in the spring sun last weekend. The Dutch and German authorities will also implement stricter controls on the border during the long weekend. "Tourists will be addressed. They are often sensitive to that, Minster Ferdinand Grapperhaus of Justice and Security said, RTL Nieuws reports.

Over the past weekend, some motorcyclists did not stick to the measures in place to fight the spread of coronavirus Covid-19, according to the broadcaster. They gathered in too large groups and occupied areas usually used by hikers and cyclists, according to Nijmegen mayor Hubert Bruls, chairman of the Safety Council - the council of safety regions. The 25 safety regions therefore decide to close certain tourist spots and small country roads to motorcyclists and cycling clubs for Easter weekend, to give hikers and recreational cyclists more room to enjoy the spring weather.

The Dutch association for motorcyclists KNMV told RTL that it is doubtful that many motorcyclists really broke the rules last weekend. "It is also imaging. Every year there are many complaints in the first nice weekends, when motorcycle enthusiasts go out again," Arjan Everink of the association said to the broadcaster. "We are curious bout the exact figures for the weekend." According to the association, the vast majority of motorcyclists adhered to the advice to stay home. "But just like among hikers and cyclists, there are always people who are not sensible."
