Oranje’s Bloodworth says of her U.S. in-laws: “I want to make them proud”

The World Cup final against the United States on Sunday is extra special for Dominique Bloodworth. Because while she is playing for the Oranje Lionesses, she is married to an American. Despite this conflict of interest, the Oranje defender knows her in-laws support her and plans to make them proud, she said to NU.nl.

"My husband Brandon is now in France. He said he will secretly cheer a little more for the Netherlands on Sunday", Bloodworth said. Her in-laws live in California. "They are following my matches there. My mother-in-law even closed her office this World Cup so she could watch us."

Bloodworth got married last year and took her husband's name. During the European Championships in 2017, she still played as Dominique Janssen. "In the US, your last name is even more important than in the Netherlands", she said to the newspaper. "That I'm in the World Cup as Bloodworth is very special for my in-laws. I want to make them proud."
