Rap artist Feis killed in Rotterdam New Year's Day shootout

An end-of-year spate of violent, dramatic crimes in Rotterdam spilled over into the new year, with the fatal shooting of rap musician Faisal Mssyeh. The 32-year-old, better known as Feis Ecktuh or just "Feis", died at a hospital shortly after the 5:15 a.m. incident on Tuesday.

A second person was hurt in the shooting, a 31-year-old man, who was also taken to a hospital, police said. Seven suspects were taken into custody, including four men between the ages of 36 and 45, two women aged 32 and 59, and a 15-year-old girl.

The shooting took place on Nieuwe Binnenweg in the Middelland district, officers said. Police fired off warning shots preceding arrests on Heemraadsplein about a half-kilometer away.

Feis released his first solo album in 2014, and followed it up with a second album and an EP by the end of 2015. Top Notch record label's Kees de Koning said he was stunned by the rapper's death. "Going to miss you. Your super-talent, sense of humor, and the way you always stood ready for everyone."

Dutch radio presenter Giel Beelen called the killing "a loss for Dutch hip-hop." His message on Twitter was among many from the Netherlands music community expressing shock, sadness, and anger.

"Every rapper in [the Netherlands] grew up with Feis. We lost a legend," wrote musician YS.

The musician Sticks, also on Top Notch, said "You are a stand-up guy and a great rapper. Forever." He wished strength to Mssyeh's family.
