Video: I Amsterdam letters removed from Museumplein

The red and white 'I Amsterdam' letters were removed from the Museumplein on Monday morning. The removal started at 8:30 a.m. and the letters were taken away on a truck 30 minutes later, Het Parool reports.

The proposal to remove the letters was made by GroenLinks, the largest party in the Dutch capital. According to the party, the slogan has become a symbol of mass tourism. Despite fierce criticism, the proposal was accepted by a majority of the city council.

The removed letters will now be patched up and will then go on 'tour', visiting a number of events, according to the newspaper.

I Amsterdam letters can still be found in other parts of the city, such as in Nieuw-West and Zuidoost.
