Rescue brigade advises against swimming: weather is warm, water isn't

With summer-high temperatures expected in the Netherlands today and tomorrow, many Dutch may be tempted into the water. Be very careful when going swimming, the Rescue Brigade warns. The weather may be warm, but the water is still very cold.

With the water still icy cold, swimmers risk hypothermia or cramps. If you do go swimming, only do so in places where the Rescue Brigade is present, the brigade advises. Don't stay in the water too long as this increases the chance of hypothermia or a cramp. Don't dunk your head under water. "You lose body heat quickest through your head", according to the Rescue Brigade. Remember to apply sunscreen regularly.

The rest of the week is expected to be sunny and warm in the Netherlands, according to Weeronline. Maximum temperatures on Wednesday will range between 20 and 27 degrees Celsius. Thursday will be even hotter, with maximums between 26 and 29 degrees. Some places in the southeast of the country may even see temperatures as high as 30 degrees.
