Gas smell triggers train evacuation at Amsterdam Amstel station
A train was evacuated at Amsterdam Amstel station on Wednesday morning after passengers smelled gas. One passenger became unwell, Het Parool reports.
The train was traveling from Utrecht to Amsterdam when passengers smelled gas near Breukelen station around 8:50 a.m. When one passenger fell ill, it was decided to evacuate the train at Amstel station. Emergency services treated the unwell passenger at the station.
The train was checked over, but no trace of gas was found. Gas was also smelled in a second train traveling towards Amsterdam, but this train continued its journey unhindered.
The gas smell probably came from outside, a NS spokesperson said to Het Parool. He theorized that it likely came from a cargo ship 'degassing' on the Amsterdam-Rijn canal.
