Shooting in heart of Nijmegen leaves one injured

A 28-year-old man was seriously injured in a fight during which shots were fired on Grotestraat in the center of Nijmegen early on Sunday morning. The police are investigating.

The police responded to a nightclub on Grotestraat around 3:40 a.m. on Sunday and found the wounded man there, the Gelderlander reports. Witnesses told the police that two men were fighting in the nightclub. A security guard escorted one man outside, and the other followed. Shortly thereafter, bystanders heard gunshots.

Police officers using sniffer dogs searched the surrounding area for the other man, based on descriptions received from witnesses. He wasn't found.

The 28-year-old man from Nijmegen was taken to hospital with serious injuries. He will be questioned as soon as possible, the police said on Sunday, according to the newspaper.

Detectives and forensic investigators carried out extensive investigations at the scene on Sunday. Initial findings show that shots were indeed fired.
