A Bulgarian woman was found without a pulse, bleeding on the street late Friday night in Zaandam after an older man entered a nearby police station to alert authorities of the stabbing. The man, also from Bulgaria, was holding a bloody knife.
Police took the 44-year-old man into custody as a suspect in the stabbing, while officers responded to the victim and resuscitated her. When police arrived, they found the woman without a pulse on the Czaar Peterstraat.
Paramedics quickly arrived on scene. The woman, 28, was transported in critical condition to the VU hospital in Amsterdam.
Authorities said the Bulgarian man first entered the police station on Nicolaasstraat at about 11:20 p.m. They have asked witnesses to contact them to help piece together the full story.
