Over 100 flights cancelled at Schiphol as storm approaches

Some 59 flights scheduled to depart on Wednesday from Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport were cancelled with wind gusts expected to top 110 kilometers per hour that day. All departures were scheduled to take off between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m.

A further 59 arrivals, set to land on Wednesday between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. were also scrapped.

Schiphol released the announcement late Tuesday afternoon regarding the storm. The airport communicated that more flights may be delayed or canceled, and passengers should watch airline and airport websites for the most up-to-date information.

As of 4 p.m. on Tuesday there were no preemptive cancellations at the Eindhoven Airport, Rotterdam-The Hague Airport and Groningen Airport. There were a few scattered delays at Maastricht Aachen Airport.

A code yellow weather warning was already in place for the first storm of 2018 a full 24 hours in advance of its expected arrival, national meteorological office KNMI announced. Sustained wind speeds could hold just shy of 100 km/h, with fierce gales expected during the Wednesday morning and evening rush hours.
